Acapulco

Acapulco falls on the other side of Mexico in the state of Guerrero on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Barely a half-mile wide, the city sprawls around the semicircular Acapulco Bay and is also a major seaport for shipping lines running between Panama and San Francisco.

The city is one of Mexcio's hugely popular tourist destinations, known for its amazing nightlife, spring break population, world resorts, and affordable accommodations as well as its long, romantic history of pirates, smugglers, and spice ships.

The Golden Zone is the central tourist zone of the city, including the main street of La Costera, with the mainstay of the nightlife in its first-rate hotels, nightclubs, and bars. Las Brisas contains many movie star homes, upscale discos, and fine dining establishments while Pie de la Cuesta will give you tranquil beaches and a lagoon with some of the best sunsets seen this side of the Pacific.

For some stunning entertainment, the cliff divers of La Quebrada put on amazing performances, wowing audiences since 1934. First, they pray to a small shrine for protection, then from heights of 82-115 ft, at least three cliff divers swan dive into the narrow ocean cove below. Blown away the first time you witness this feat? You're allowed to stay for multiple performances.

But perhaps the best part about Acapulco is that its real Mexican traditonal flavor is easier to find than in other resorts in the country. The Centro de Convenciones is a massive complex that contains a permanant crafts gallery, theater, concert hall, plaza, and special exhibitions.

Laguna de Tres Palos can be found deeper into the Mexican wilderness around Acapulco, with a swamp and a freshwater lagoon for boating and fishing. If you follow the lagoon out to where it meets the Pacific Ocean, you'll come across the long stretch of clean, palmy beach called Barra Vieja, tourist-free and complete with several restaurants that serve up fresh seafood.
