AnchorageBy far Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage is your best bet for finding your usual city amenities, but even this big city, boasting a modest 259,391 residents, cannot escape the wild, rustic charm that seems inherent throughout the state.
In March, Anchorage is the starting point of the internationally famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, spanning over 1000 miles of Alaskan wilderness. Hundreds of participants and their well-kept dogs enter this grueling but exciting race, braving wind, ice, and cold in order to be the first to cross the finish line in Nome.
The city’s Museum of History and Art is a wealthy resource of much of Alaska’s indigenous culture and art as well as detailed and impressive displays exploring the history of the state itself. It’s a great place to get a feel for the fierce spirit of Alaska’s people.
Since nature is, quite literally, just outside your doorstep in Alaska, close by Anchorage is Chugach State Park. With a sprawling half-million acres of land containing well-developed hiking and mountain biking trails, it’s the third largest state park in America. The park is great for eagle-watching, seeing some breathtaking, panoramic views of the Alaskan landscape, and smelling some exotic wildflowers.
As if that weren't enough, there is a whole slew of National Parks and wildlife refuges across the region: Kenai Fjords National Park in all its startling beauty, Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge with ove 130 species of birds, Far North Bicentennial Park, Delaney Park, or the Elmendorf AFB Wildlife Museum.
