BarcelonaBarcelona follows a long string of city names across the globe as being a leader in culture and cutting-edge fashion. The world flocks to this city to enjoy the week-long festivals it throws throughout the course of the year and it isn’t hard to see why: a certain sense of wildness pervades its architecturally appealing streets, a flair for fun, music, and only the best things in life.
The Barri Gòtic is a chaotic collection of dark streets crammed full with cafes, bars, markets, and cheap hotels. This forms the center of Old Barcelona, with its nestled medieval buildings that date from the 14th and 15th centuries. In the midst of this quarter is the Plaça de Sant Jaume, home to a bustling market and weekly entertainment venues such as the dancing of the sardana.
La Rambla is a lengthy, tree-lined pedestrian boulevard packed with street entertainment, shops, stands, a bird market, and even an opera house, running the gamut from beautiful to seedy. The Mercat de la Boqueria was voted Europe’s best produce market, so check out the delicious array of fresh vegetables and fruits for sale.
Montjuïc is an ideal gathering place, filled with art galleries, leisure attractions, parks, and many of the 1992 Olympic sites. This section of the city is a fascinating exploration, from the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya which houses an impressive collection of Romanesque art to Poble Espanyol, which gives visitors a taste of Spanish architecture from all over the country.
Art lovers will also enjoy the Museu Picasso, a high-traffic museum feature many stunning works from the artist’s early years and Blue Period.
