BerlinBerlin, with its 4.5 million inhabitants, is still a city struggling to find a united voice after a tumultuous century of constant upheaval, but it’s a city that has proven its strength and its determination against those forces that would try and divide it. As a result, it still stands firm today, drawing in millions of visitors annually.
Though the Berlin Wall has long since been torn down, the division between the ritzier west city and the somewhat shabbier east city can still clearly be seen with dramatic differences in architecture and even walk signs.
As almost an icon of old Berlin, Brandenburger Tor, or Brandenburger Gate, once was the closed symbol of the divide between East and West Berlin. It has often served as a center for militant political rallies through the years and even as a point of celebration when the wall was torn down in 1989.
The Checkpoint Charlie Museum is a fascinating study of the famed tower that once symbolized the East-West tension during the years of the cold war. The museum features many of the often creative devices used in desperate escape attempts from East Berlin. 80 people died trying to do so. Nearby the museum is the East Side Gallery which still preserves a portion of the original Wall, now decorated by local artists.
West of Potsdamer Platz lies the Kulturforum, a thick cluster of museums and concert venues. Whether you enjoy music at the Kammer musikaal and the Matthäuskirche or want to take in the paintings of the Gemäldegalerie, there is something that will fill your cultural cravings.
Moving towards the former East Berlin in Rigaer Strasse and you’ll encounter its notorious set of underground clubs, oftentimes only opening when the owners feel like it. Counter-culture runs rampant here, so if you want a taste of something less mainstream, then these nightclubs and bars may be to your liking.
