British ColumbiaDestinations in British Columbia
British Columbia, of more fondly, BC, is Canada’s westernmost province, situated on the Pacific coast and bordering many U.S. states such as Washington, Idaho, and Montana. It's over 4 million people strong, with most of the population concentrated in the city of Vancouver.
With breathtaking scenery and significantly more temperate climates than its provincial cousins, British Columbia has topped the tourist charts of Canada for both its ecotourism and its bustling city of Vancouver, with its reputation as a cultural and artistic center as well as its significant film and television production industries.
In fact, British Columbia is the third largest film and television producer in North America after Los Angeles and New York City, so much so that it’s been nicknamed “Hollywood North.” Its idyllic setting, gentler weather, and the surrounding picturesque beauty of its lush rainforests make it a good chance that you've seen the city of Vancouver in many films and television productions.
Other important areas of revenue include fishing, mining, foresting, hydroelectric power, and, of course, tourism. British Columbia's majority of wild or semi-wild terrain has made it the refuge for many of North America's rare animals, which have steadily disappeared from other regions of the continent. This includes grizzly and black bears, elk, caribou, big-horn sheep, wolves, mountain goats, eagles, osprey, and owls.
In addition to camping and hiking in the great outdoors, skiing is also an enjoyed past time, both cross-country and more recently alpine and snowboarding in the Coast Mountain rage of the Rockies and in the South Selkirk mountains. In other seasons, a number of water sports such as kayaking and whitewater rafting are popular because of British Columbia's numerous fjords and inlet rivers.
