CancúnOriginally starting out as a small fishing village in Quintana Roo, Mexico's most eastern state, in the 1950's, Cancún has since grown to be one of the world's most renowned vacation resorts.
With comfortable temperatures ranging from 78.8 to 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit, the city has about 140 hotels with 24,000 rooms and 380 restaurants, catering to over two million visitors each year on an average of 190 daily flights.
Cancún's Hotel Zone boasts an expensive array of upscale restaurants, bars, and malls, where you'll often be able to spot many of the vacationing rich and famous.
Kukulcan Boulevard is the main thoroughfare while on the west side of the island is Laguna Nichupte, an extensive lagoon that is also home to hundreds of marinas, waterfront restaurants, shopping malls, golf courses, nightclubs, bars, and, of course, outstandingly beautiful beaches.
If you want something that's a little kinder to your wallet and will appeal more to your taste for culture, then head on over to the city's downtown, which caters to its 500,000 locals with much more Latin authenticity and prices. It's also less touristy, so it's a good way to take a break from the constant throngs of vacationers.
Cancún is also a very popular resort for Americans on spring break. The beaches, the weather, the warm ocean, and the many bars make Cancún a terrific place for frost-bitten nortenos to heat things up.
