Since the time of Christopher Columbus, the Caribbean, or the West Indies as the famous explorer labeled them, has filled a place of exotic mystery in the eyes of Europe.

The name encompasses over 7,000 islands, islets, reefs and cays organized into 25 territories in the Caribbean Sea, starting at the southern tip of Florida in the U.S. and extending to the Northwest of Venezuela in South America.

The region encompasses some of the more well-known vacation spots like the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. These nations have built a thriving economy around tourism, making leisure and hospitality their business.

Today, the Caribbean still very much is an exotic resort away from the grinds of daily life, a relaxing vacation filled with sunny skies, white, sandy beaches, and clear, blue waters.

European colonization, and even present-day dominion, has heavily influenced the culture of these islands, from the British Bahamas and Jamaica to the Spanish-styled Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, creating an intoxicating mixture of indigenous and European flavor.
