ChinaDestinations in China
There is the West and then, overlooked but far more culturally rich, is the East. China can nearly be said to be the epitome if this with its ancient civilization and staggering history. Rounding the corner of the 21st century, China has leaped forward industrially and technologically, yet has still managed to keep a firm grasp on its culture, customs, and heritage.
China’s capital, Beijing, is both its political and economic seat of power, with a struggling and searing recent history that still lies in the hearts and minds of many of its 13 million inhabitants. All of this is reflected in its architecture, from the ancient designs of the Forbidden City and the Great Wall to the newer, sleeker buildings replacing the older, demolished ones.
Recently returned into Chinese hands, Hong Kong is the fast-paced, word city of the East, a heavy mixture of European and Chinese culture set in a highly-industrialized, sky-scrapered, commercial, urban center. Between the shopping, restaurants, traffic, crowds, and all-around big city life, there are still secluded temples and quiet parks that afford people some contemplative peace.
Shanghai was once China's most multi-cultural, international city until the Maoist Revolution, but even now it’s slowly regaining some of its former glory, carrying vestiges of its mixed European history and sophistication. It still remains as an arts and cultural center for the country and many Chinese film production studios still carry on there today.
On the heels of the Hong Kong handover was the Macau handover by Portugal. Macau was once the oldest European colony in China and foreign occupation of this area is still heavily prevalent. It's a bustling city most noted for its many casinos and its close proximity to Hong Kong ensures a steady stream of day-trippers and tourists.
