Costa Rica

If great beaches just aren't enough for your spring break, and you love going the extra mile, check out the scene in Costa Rica. This small country in Central America is home to about 4 million people, miles of beaches and great surfing. It's also ecologically enlightened, with animal conservation efforts visible everywhere.

Costa Rica has a high standard of living thanks to its tourist economy and expansion into the high-tech industry and does not suffer the violence and instability of its neighbors. In fact, a common saying that you'll hear from the mouths of the locals, "pure vida" or pure life. Costa Rican's believe in only best life has to offer, which in turn will make your vacation one of the most relaxing, beautiful, and sense-fulfilling experiences you will ever have.

Both the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica are gorgeous, though the Pacific side is more popular with tourists, especiall Golfito. The capital city of San José isn't on either coast, but it's worth spending a few days in. It's the transporation hub of the country and has a more North American feel to it than many other Latin capitals complete with malls, fast food restaurants, and department stores.

But there is also a very cultural side to San José, including colorful markets like Mercado Central, flavorful cuisine and several excellent museums like Museo Nacional, which features several displays of Costa Rican archeology, colonial furniture, costumes, and religious art. Let your eyes be dazzled by Museo de Oro Precolumbino, which has an impressive display of pre-Columbian gold, and the Museo de Jade, with the world's largest collection of American jade sculptures.

If you're looking for a change of scenery, head inland and stop by one of Costa Rica's beautiful national parks that have benefited from over 40 years of government funding. Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal is centered around a perfectly conical and extremely active volcano, Arenal. Puerto Limón is a tropical park teeming with exotic wildlife like red macaws and sloths. Parque Nacional Tortuguero is a famous breeding ground for the endangered green sea turtles.
