DenverOne of America’s youngest and most vibrant cities, Denver is a growing cultural metropolis blessed with sunny weather, beautiful surroundings, and a lot more that you might not expect. Founded as a gold rush town, the Mile High City has blossomed into a major urban area, with the country’s tenth-largest downtown, numerous local and national breweries, 90 golf courses, and the nation’s biggest city park system.
So what is there to do in Denver? The downtown area is home to major sports teams, including the Colorado Rockies baseball franchise, the NFL’s Denver Broncos, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Downtown Denver also features galleries and shopping, the Six Flags Elitch Gardens theme park, and a number of museums including the Denver Art Museum, which is considered to house the world’s finest collection of Native American artwork.
Denver is also home to breweries—more beer is brewed here than in any other American city. Breweries run from small brew pubs all the way to the industry giant Coors. The Coors Brewery offers free tours to those over 21 years of age.
A popular family attraction is the Denver Zoo, which is one of the five most popular zoos in the country. Ocean’s Journey Aquarium brings marine life to a landlocked state, and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science’s recent improvements include a digital planetarium and a space museum.
If the kids want to get outdoors more, take a bike ride along some of the city’s 650 miles of paved bike trails. It’s not as cold as you think—Denver’s weather is actually quite mild and dry, with average winter temperatures higher than those of cities like New York or St. Louis, and dry, cool summers. Denver is a mountain city, but it’s not actually in the mountains; it’s just next door to the Rockies, and the weather means you can enjoy a visit at any time of year.
