District of ColumbiaTake a patriotic vacation with a visit to the District of Columbia, our nation’s capital and the eighth-most popular destination city in the United States. Since its founding in 1791, Washington, D.C. has grown into a uniquely American city with numerous historical and cultural attractions. Located on the banks of the Potomac River, Washington, D.C. is a large and vibrant area, with a total metropolitan population of approximately 5.4 million.
No trip to Washington, D.C. would be complete without visits to the Capitol Building, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the National Mall, the Washington Monument, and other historical landmarks. Stop by the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, one of the most unique and thought-provoking war memorials ever designed.
The two hundred acres of Arlington National Cemetery were designated as an official military cemetery in 1864. The cemetery holds the remains of more than 260,000 people, including presidents William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy, and the Tomb of the Unknowns. Arlington is open 365 days a year for guests who wish to pay their respects to America’s fallen military heroes.
Washington’s cultural resources are vast, as one would imagine. The Smithsonian Institution, a cluster of over a dozen museums and the National Zoo, is a must-see that’s worth the devotion of more than one day. Bookworms will want to pay a visit to the Library of Congress, the world’s biggest library.
For historic architecture, great ethnic cuisine, bookstores, and art galleries, visit Dupont Circle. Georgetown is another neighborhood rich in history, with a variety of architectural styles, many dining and shopping experiences, and the campus of Georgetown University.
Many visitors don’t realize that D.C. also has a rich performing arts scene, with more theater seats than any city in the country except New York. Washington is also home to a number of sports teams, including the Washington Redskins (NFL), Washington Wizards (NBA) and, newly arrived from Montreal, the Washington Nationals baseball team (MLB).
