DubaiDubai has become known as the “Hong Kong” or “Singapore” of the Middle East, with its broadly beautiful coastline, futuristic skyscrapers, internationally famous shopping festivals, and the audacity of its rulers to construct some of the most marvelous artificial wonders the world has ever seen, including artificial islands to add almost 75 miles of new beachfront.
The city features several souqs for the shopping mad, catering to all sorts of products and prices that are dirt cheap. The Bur Dubai Souq mostly caters to the city’s Indian and Pakistani ex-pat community while at the Deira Gold Souq, you can find dazzling piles of gold and silver jewelry. The Diera Covered Souq has a distinctly Indian flavor, selling just about everything but specializing in kitchenware, textiles, and henna.
Get all your electronic and DVD goodies at the Electronics Souq at nearly zero tax and haggled-down prices. Some of the best Arabian and European perfumes can be purchased at the Perfume Souq, both designer originals and copies. The Diera Old Souq sells all sorts of delicious spices and fruits, from frankincense and dried lemons to ginger root, chili, and cardamom.
If there’s only one thing you can do in Dubai, make sure to visit Dubai Creek and see the city from the water, be it boarding a cruise or renting out a small boat for yourself. The waterfront is simply stunning to take in, amazing skyscrapers dotting Dubai’s famous skyline intermixed with the remnants of its old city.
For some relief, check out Jumeirah Beach Bark, where heaps of money is spent keeping the area lush and green in the arid climate. The long stretch of beach is kept clean, lined with palm trees, and features several walkways and open spaces for barbecues, picnics, and children’s play areas.
