EdinburghWith its proximity to England and its streets lined with Georgian architecture interspersed with decided modernity, Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is also one of its most popular spots to chase away bad-weather blues, attracting young and old alike.
Hogmanay and summer is when the city gets its highest volume of visitors, due mostly to the several art festivals it holds, including the International Edinburgh Festival where you’re likely to see some of the world’s most famous faces. The streets of the city bloom with liveliness, especially during Hogmanay when a large bonfire is built on Carlton Hill and people celebrate in the streets well into the night despite the cold.
At other times of the year, Edinburgh is certainly no less magical, felt best with a panoramic view of the city from atop Carlton Hill. Once you’ve had your eyeful of the city, proceed on to Holyrood Park, a veritable wilderness right on the city’s doorstep. It’s one square mile of hills, moorland, lakes, and fields.
Edinburgh Castle is found in the center of the city, sitting in the core of an extinct volcano. Once a defensive fort against the Picts, it is now a large tourist attraction, with tour groups roaming its grounds daily.
For one of the world’s best places for shopping, take a stroll down Princes Street, Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare in New Town. North of that center is the city’s main port, Leith, and a pleasant bed of several cafes and eateries.
In Old Town, Grassmarket is the place to be for nighttime activities. The area is home to a number of restaurants, shops, and pubs. From the southeast corner is the Royal Museum of Scotland and the University of Edinburgh’s Old College, places worth a visit during the daytime.
