FairbanksFairbanks, Alaska is where you can find log cabins lining the downtown streets situated next to the attractive college campus of University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Look towards the horizon and you can see North America’s tallest mountain, Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park; glance up towards the skies on a cold winter night and have your breath taken away by the shimmering Northern Lights.
The Golden Heart Plaza, an attractive riverside park, is situated at the heart of the city and marks out its downtown area. In the center of the plaza is a bronze statue of the Unknown First Family to commemorate an Athabascan family braving the wild climate of the Alaska to found the city.
One of Fairbanks’ biggest draws is not actually in the city itself but up in the overhead skies. Aurora Borealis, better known as the Northern Lights, can be seen most clearly from Fairbanks, especially during the winter season. The event often colors the sky for several hours, and sometimes, less than ten minutes.
In Fairbanks, the well-known college is the University of Alaska Museum, interesting for its especially famous exhibit of Blue Babe, a fully restored bison that is over 36,000 years old and was found perfectly preserved in the permafrost. Another popular exhibit is the gold nugget display, found in the mines of Alaska during the height of the gold rush days.
For the golf-obsessed, Fairbanks Golf & Country Club keeps its courses open 24 hours a day during June and July thanks to Alaska's extended daylight hours.
