Destinations in Georgia

As the largest state east of the Mississippi River, Georgia has plenty of room for new and exciting events as well as space for the Old South. The state capital, Atlanta, is a perfect example. Atlanta is a major metropolitan area, a fast-growing business center that still retains Southern charm and hospitality. Throughout the state, you’ll find both modern and old-fashioned sights that reflect Georgia’s rich history and its expanding future.

Outside Atlanta, there’s much to see in the Peach State. Down on the Georgia coast, the beautiful city of Savannah is a southern town steeped in tradition. Just off the coast are Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, and Sea Island; both Savannah and the islands are home to world-class golf and resorts, with protected beaches that remain unspoiled.

Of course, it’s impossible to mention golf in Georgia without thinking of Augusta National, one of the best-known golf courses in the world and host to the Masters golf tournament. Sports play a large role in Southern culture; practically the entire state follows either the UGA Bulldogs or the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets during NCAA football and basketball seasons.

The University of Georgia is located in the northeastern part of the state in the small, charming city of Athens, also known for having one of the best alternative music scenes in the country. Both the Appalachian and Cumberland mountain ranges are present in Georgia, and this is also where you’ll find the Blue Ridge Mountains, beginning of the legendary Appalachian Trail.
