HawaiiDestinations in Hawaii
Between the six main islands of Hawaii—Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Hawaii (Big Island), Lanai, and Molokai—you’ll find some of the best beaches, surf, and weather in the entire world. No wonder so many people dream of a Hawaiian vacation. Since there’s only one major airport, in Honolulu on Oahu, your Hawaiian trip will begin there. But why not explore some of the other, lesser-traveled islands as well?
The Big Island, known for agriculture (macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, and tropical flowers) is also the annual host of the Ironman Triathlon, perhaps the world’s most grueling sporting event. Kilauea, the world’s longest continuously-erupting volcano, is on Big Island, as are rainforests and even, at Mauna Kea, frozen tundra.
Maui has the second-largest population of the Hawaiian Islands, behind Oahu, and its shallow surrounding waters are birthing grounds for humpback whales. Kauai is the most remote of the islands, with relatively little tourism; known as the “Separate Kingdom,” it’s the perfect island for travelers who want to leave everything, including other travelers, behind.
Lanai is also an island less visited, though it does host two four-star resorts. Molokai has perhaps the most stunning geography of all the islands, featuring the only barrier reef located north of Australia, both black and white sand beaches, and Kahiwa Falls, the tallest sea cliff in the world.
