Hong KongAs one of the truly busiest cities in Asia, Hong Kong is a conglomerate mix of multi-European influence while still stubbornly retaining its Asian heritage. Home to an equally diverse population of 6.7 million people, Hong Kong is fast-paced, highly commercial, and incredibly vibrant; even the recent upheaval of the British to Chinese hand-over couldn’t set this city back for long.
The capitalistic heart of Hong Kong is Hong Kong Island, a tightly condensed sprawl of businesses, markets, and those harried people teeming in the sidewalks to get to them. It’s a sight to be seen, but many visitors will head over to Aberdeen along the southern side of the island. Six thousand people live and work on junks dotting the harbor where you can take a tour and even eat in one of the many floating restaurants.
Another popular draw on the island is Repulse Bay, also found near Aberdeen. Stanley is a bit more relaxed from the fast-paced world of the business district and includes somewhat more tranquil attractions such as the Man Mo Temple and the Zoological and Botanic Gardens. The Central Market is superb for shopping and finding authentic dishes, just beware of the weekends where even this part of Hong Kong can become crowded.
Kowloon is the more touristy part of Hong Kong, packed with shops, restaurants, and pubs, especially the liveliest night market on Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei. You can also find broader attractions like the Hong Kong Cultural Center, the Space Museum, the Peninsula Hotel, and the Museum of History in this area. Take a stroll along the Promenade in East Tsim Sha Tsui, which boasts spectacular views of Victoria Harbor and is positively stunning at night.
No visit to Hong Kong is ever complete without a trip to the top of Victoria peak. At 1810 feet above sea level, on the roof of a large shopping mall no less, the views of Hong Kong are breathlessly beautiful in every direction, from the business district to Kowloon to the harbor.
