India

India is a siren’s song to those travelers who dream of the exotic. There seems to be little uniformity in visions of India, save for an almost chaotic jumble of visceral delights, from its overcrowded cities to its varied geographies of rural countryside.

Its history, spanning countless centuries, is rich with the rise and fall of civilizations and empires, left evidenced by the sheer number of temples, monuments, ruins, artifacts, and architecture strewn nearly everywhere in the country.

Delhi is the capital of India and swarming with a massive population of almost 14 million people and a mixture of cultures and religions. It can be intimidating but thrilling, and surprisingly peaceful even, once you see past the sacred cows standing in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. The old portion of the city is crowded with ancient architecture, mosques, monuments, and forts, while the newer imperial Delhi is open, modernized, and palatial.

The Taj Mahal located in Agra has become the symbol of India. Beautiful, graceful, and poignant, with gently curving lines and reflection pools that are well-recognized all over the world, the Taj Mahal is a Mughal mausoleum erected by Emperor Shah Jahan in loving memory of his second wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in childbirth.

Also found in the city is the Agra Fort, made from red sandstone and dizzying in its complex of halls, mosques, chambers, and gardens, as if it were a world within a world.

Mumbai, or what is more commonly known as Bombay, is world famous for Bollywood cinema, Hollywood’s Eastern rival. It has all the glitz and glamour of its Western equivalent and thousands pour into this city each year in hopes of getting into the pictures.
