IndonesiaIndonesia holds the title for being the world’s largest archipelago, consisting of 18,108 islands between the Asian and Australian continents, many of which contain indigenous tribes and peoples that have had very little contact with the outside world.
It’s this image of third world exoticism, heavy rainforests in a humid climate steamily hung over the Pacific, that captures the hearts and minds of those travelers looking to step off the well-worn paths of the world.
Indonesia’s national and economic capital, Jakarta, has a distinctly cosmopolitan flavor that attracts many immigrants and tourists, resulting in a huge mixture of cultures, languages, and customs.
Though you’re just as likely to find mega shopping malls and McDonald’s on the corner as you are a cultural performance centers like the Senayan where traditional performances like wayang and gamelan are featured, Jakarta gives you that big city vibrancy while still retaining its Indonesian feel.
The island of Bali is an extremely popular tourist destination known for its individualized style of music, specialized by the gamelan. Principle cities include Singaraja and Denpasar on the coast while the town of Ubud is regarded as the cultural center of Bali with its art market, museums, and galleries.
Kuta and its beach are frequently visited along with towns like Sanur, Jimbaran, Seminyak, and Nusa Dua. All these towns boast some truly amazing views and wonderful black sand and white sand beaches. The island is surrounded by coral reefs, making snorkeling and scuba diving exciting affairs. Be sure to stop by the markets for some famous traditional batik and ikat cloth.
