Italian AlpsEdging along Italy’s northern border with France is Gran Paradiso National Park, the country’s oldest and most popular park and home to the well-frequented Italian Alps. The territory of the park spans some 17,000 acres and is glutted with high snow-capped mountains, deep, lush valleys, glacial lakes, meadows, and forests.
Hiking is the park’s biggest attraction, with plenty of scenic trails stretching over the region spotted by old mountain huts. The most popular times for hiking are from June through September when most of the snow is melted. In the winter, the Italian Alps are popular for both alpine and cross-country skiing and mountain climbing is popular all year round.
Within the park also lies Italy’s largest mountain, Gran Paradiso at over 4,000 meters high, which is rigorous to climb but doesn’t require any advanced techniques.
