JuneauJuneau is the capital of Alaska and certainly one of the nation’s least accessible. It can’t be reached by road and every year over 200 flights are cancelled due to inclement weather conditions.
However, in its seeming isolation, Juneau is an astoundingly beautiful cradle of glacier landscapes, lush evergreen forests, and wild coastline.
The city’s biggest attraction is probably Glacier Bay National Park where some 16 tidewater glaciers pour out from the mountains and crowd the sea with icebergs of all different kinds of sizes, shapes, and hues of blue.
The area is ripe with marine life like humpback whales, sea otters, and seals while you can find bears, moose, and over 200 species of birds in the surrounding evergreen forests
Winding its way through the capital is Perseverance Trail, a popular walkway that includes the trails of Perseverance, Mt. Juneau, and Granite Creek.
Those who want to conquer all three will find a challenging 10-hour walk ahead of them or can pace it out by camping overnight under a clear, star-studded sky.
