KaohsiungTaiwan’s second largest city, Kaohsiung, is also its largest industrial center. It’s an important port city through which most of Taiwan’s oil is imported. Unlike Taipei, Kaohsiung’s roads are wide and less congested, giving the city an easier and freer feel. With its fingers on the pulse of Taiwan’s economy, the city is striding through the early part of the 21st century to swiftly become an international city.
Amuse yourself in Blue Lagoon Water Park, about ten minutes from the city center. This huge Caribbean-styled water park contains a seven-storey waterslide large enough to accompany wide rubber boats for whole families to enjoy together. For those seeking relaxation, the park also offers a large tropical pool with simulated gentle waves for floating in and basking under the sun.
The famous Liu Ho Night Market, since the 1950s, has been the center of Kaohsiung nightlife, with over 138 stalls offering a delicious variety of foods, drinks, snacks, recreational games, clothes, and trinkets. Prices are sinfully cheap and the market stays open all night. It’s an exciting place to walk around, enjoy a cheap and tasty authentic meal, and to spend a little money.
The Jen Ai River that runs along Kaohsiung is more commonly known as the Love River for its beautiful scenery, especially at sunrises and sunsets. The city government took an active role in cleaning up the river after decades of heavy industrialization and pollution marred its beauty. Today, the river is much cleaner, with several parks commissioned around the area and a pristine boardwalk. It’s the perfect place for romance to blossom.
