Kenya

There is a wild, ragged beauty to Kenya that can’t be matched by Westernized civilizations, European architecture, or English gardens. The cradle of human life still retains its sense of origins and wonder, with its stunning wildlife parks, clean beaches, traditional Swahili cities, and breathtaking mountains.

In July and August, the migration of wildebeests from the Serengeti and then back again in October is an indescribable event, best seen at Maasai Mara National Reserve, the most popular wildlife park in the country. In the western border of the park, the Esoit Oolooloo Escarpment has large concentrations of elephants, buffalo, zebras, antelopes, lions, and hippos.

Nairobi, the capital of the country, is lively, cosmopolitan, and attractive. It’s the best place to get a feel for modern urban African life as well as ancient one. There are several museums housing ancient human artifacts with plenty of lively parks surrounding the city containing rhinos, giraffes, and snakes, some of which you can feed.

For a town that is a little more picturesque, try visiting Lamu, an almost exclusively Muslim-populated self-contained town – one of Kenya’s oldest. The town seems caught in time as very little has changed over the centuries and it’s a cultural treasure trove for those seeking the local flavor.

For your safari, head on out to Amboseli National Park, almost 400 square kilometers of grassy plains, with Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro serving as a backdrop, that are home to huge herds of grazing elephants.
