Kuala Lumpur

Unlike many of its Asian city counterparts, Kuala Lumpur, almost always shortened to KL, has retained its cultural flavor in the face of industrialization. From the tops of the Petronas Towers – the tallest building in the world – to its street-level markets, KL is teeming with life and culture.

One of the most enlivening areas of KL is its Chinatown, a hustle and bustle of food, shops, neon signs, street stalls, and people haggling prices with street vendors. One of the most fascinating things about it is the old architecture; however, even that is being torn down in the name of constant renovations.

For something more high end, check out KL’s Golden Triangle, practically a small city within itself and dominated by the Petronas Towers. The area is marked with pricey establishments that make for a colorful and entertaining nightlife with expensive hotels and restaurants, clubs and shops. From the top of Kuala Lumpur Tower is an amazing panoramic view of the city.

For quiet and open space, the Lake Gardens is a tranquil oasis in this chaotic city. With 92 hectacres of manicured gardens, a butterfly park, planetarium, insect museum, aviary, an orchid garden, and a hibiscus garden, this is a beautiful and fresh respite from the congested humidity of the streets.

The central heart of the city is Merdeka Square, the center of KL’s National Day celebrations. Surrounding the square are many historical buildings like the Royal Selangor Club, Sultan Abdul Samad building, the National History Museum and library, and the modern Dayabumi Complex.

If the rhythm of KL becomes too intense, there are also several attractions just outside the city that provide a nice distraction. The Batu Caves, just 8 miles north of the city, are a set of large caves where annual Hindu festivals and pilgrimages are held.

The neighboring town of Petaling Jaya offers a surprising wealth of shopping and dining options and of course, Sunway Lagoon, a massive water park with the world’s biggest surf-wave pool.
