LondonThe capital of England and, many would argue, the Western world, London is undoubtedly a “world city,” and its seven million inhabitants enjoy a beautiful and sprawling urban environment where history and government compete with an amorphous mixture of culture and awe-inspiring beauty.
The most popular places in London are really what comprise the center circle of the city. Its picturesque West End, home of Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Soho and Regent Street, is what most visitors envision when the city comes to mind. This is the center of London’s power and high brow culture, with Shakespearian plays and expensive shops.
In the city of Westminster, a burrough of London and a city in its own right, lies the string of royal palaces we’ve come to associate with the well-known British Royals, including the official royal residence of Buckingham Palace. Westminster Abbey, the burial grounds of the royals, is also worth a visit for its humbling list of historic figures residing within its tombs, including Mary, Queen of Scots and, recently, Diana, Princess of Wales.
Westminster is also the site of London’s most beautiful parks, including Hyde Park and the Kensington Gardens. Nearby also lies the old Globe Theatre and Tate Modern, wells of culture and history.
If you’re in the mood to spend a little cash, try out Camden Market on the weekend, a chaotic sprawl that sells everything and anything under the sun, from furniture and designer clothes to army surplus gear and records.
Don’t forget that London has some of the most impressive museums and galleries in the world, including the most visited tourist attraction in London, the British Museum, where over 6 million visitors pour in annually. Highlights of the museum include Assyrian artifacts, Egyptian mummies, and a 2000-year-old corpse found in a Cheshire bog.
And if you’re tired of upper crust gentrification, head on over to the East End, a much more culturally mixed area, once almost exclusively Cockney, but now host to a variety of trendy clubs, pubs, cafes, shops, and restaurants.
