LouisianaDestinations in Louisiana
Deep in the heart of the south, along the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana has always run at a different pace to her southern neighbors. As a touch of French in the Spanish bed between Texas and Florida, Louisiana is well known for its Cajun and Creole, New Orleans and swamps, jazz and gators. Come and experience a unique world that is distinctly different from any other part of the United States.
Along the toe of boot-shaped Louisiana is the city of New Orleans, a cultural melting pot of African, Cajun, Creole, and Indian influences that touch everything from the jazz roaring through the evenings to the unique architecture of the buildings lining the streets.
Tourists know that they’ll have a wild time here, traipsing through Bourbon and Royal Street in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras or seeing the famous settings of Anne Rice’s vampire novels in the Garden District.
Outside of New Orleans, things get less cosmopolitan as you get into Cajun Country, Louisiana’s backwater swamps. As indicated by the name, the dominant culture and ethnicity here is Cajun, and you can have a truly authentic experience sampling the famous local delicacies such as crawfish and alligator meat. Listen to Cajun music, zydedco, and swamp pop or take a tour through the swamps to see a varied assortment of birds, alligators, and other wildlife.
When you need a breather from the festivities, you can always head on up to Plantation Country, or specifically, the Rural Life Museum, which is operated by Louisiana State University near Baton Rouge and is dedicated to providing a rich showcase of everyday life back in 19th Century Louisiana.
Its grounds include a collection of the rural buildings typically found on a sugar plantation such as slave cottages, a commissary, a shotgun house, the overseer’s house, a cane grinder, and a sugar house. Other buildings showcase the Acadian culture in Louisiana, like a pioneer cabin with a functioning blacksmith shop.
