MadridMore than any other European capital, Madrid seems to take its duty seriously by staying up nearly all night long with revelries that last several hours until dawn.
The party seems unending, from its all-night bars, restaurants, clubs, eateries and upbeat music scene. It’s a city unusually accessible to visitors and you’ll come to know and love its fun-loving atmosphere very quickly.
If you can get up before noon, Madrid’s quieter daytime excursions still hold some real charming value. Madrid’s Moorish quarter is one of the oldest districts in the city, still containing a short stretch of city wall that had been built by medieval Muslim rulers. In the summer, open-air theater and musical performances play out in the streets.
The Museo del Prado was converted from a natural history museum in 1819 to hold the royal collection of Spanish art – some 7000 works, including 17th and 18th Spanish paintings from Velázquez, Goya and da Ribera.
The collection also includes some choice pieces from the Flemish and Italian masters. This museum is huge and less than half of the collection is on view at any given time, so be sure to visit more than once.
End a day of museum-visiting by strolling about the Parque del Buen Retiro, Madrid’s best public garden. There is an artificial lake in the park’s center where you can hire boats. On the weekends, buskers and tarot readers line the paths.
