MallorcaMallorca, Spain’s prime tourist hot spot off its mainland, is a worship to sun, beaches, and clear, warm waters. The island likes to boast that 300 out of 365 days of the year are filled with sunshine.
But even aside from the mindless sun-tanning, there is a surprising amount of places to explore on the island, so take a chance and venture off the beaches for some truly rewarding experiences.
Bird-watchers will have a wonderful time walking around Parc Natural de l'Albufera, a natural preserve for some excellent walking and cycling. There are several birds to look out for, including moorhens and coots in the grass and herons and flamingos in the reeds.
Near Porto Cristo on the east coast are the Coves del Drac, or, the Caves of the Dragon, almost 6550 feet of caves and six subterranean lakes. The tour is an hour along the impressive stalactites and stalagmites, with classical musicians playing in boats on a large underground lake. Before you leave, you too can take a boat ride across the water.
The island’s only city, Palma de Mallorca, has all the amenities of any resort city, with a glamorous nightlife. The town’s main feature, a Gothic cathedral called La Seo, is an interesting daytime excursion filled with religious artifacts, stunning architecture, and the last vestiges of Turkish occupation.
Just a train ride away, Sóller is charming old town with colorful gardens, quaint buildings, and open plazas. In the main square, Plaça de la Constitució, bars and restaurants line the streets.
