MexicoDestinations in Mexico
The US’s neighbor to the south is a mixture of tourist retreats, rural villages, ancient ruins, and sprawling cities, with a terrain that runs nearly everywhere in between. Whether you want to crawl over an old Mayan ruin or knock back a margarita in Cancún, there is a very exotic flavor about Mexico that is easily accessible to all visitors.
Mexico City, the third largest metropolis in the world after Tokyo and New York, is a mixture of good and bad. Slums and smog threaten to overtake the city, but there is an undeniable liveliness in its world-renowned museums, monuments, plazas, colonial buildings, archaeological finds, monasteries, and cathedrals. It would take virtually months to explore the wealth that this city has to offer.
At the risk of becoming a bit more tourist-infested, Acapulco offers golden beaches and warm waters, a romantic and exotic atmosphere that’s a hugely popular resort for vacationers everywhere. In addition to picturesque beaches are museums, galleries, aquariums, and those famous cliff-side divers who leap from dizzying heights to plunge into the ocean below.
Guadalajara, Mexico’s second largest city, is the birthplace of those things that we often think of as being essentially Mexican: mariachi music, tequila, sombrero hats, and the Mexican rodeo. This city has all of the vibrant culture of the capital but hardly any of the plaguing problems like pollution and crime. Features include a massive twin-towered cathedral and its surrounding areas, the Instituto Cultural de Cabañas, and the Plaza de los Mariachies.
For a taste of history, the Yucatán Peninsula is a huge favorite of archaeologists, being the site of the one glorious Mayan Civilization with its surprising advancements in astronomy, math, and farming. In addition to the impressive Mayan ruins, you can visit the beautiful seaside resorts, sort through the tropical forests, lounge on the quiet coastlines, or live up the wild nightlife in Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Cancún.
