MontrealOne of Canada’s most culturally diverse cities and urban centers while still managing to retain its European flair, Montréal is the largest city in Québec and a veritable melting pot of predominantly French and English cultures, but also a bit Spanish, Italian and Greek thrown in for good measure.
It’s a city of old and new, uniquely manifested in its architecture, from the old, historic buildings of Old Montréal to the younger, more contemporary life of downtown at the foot of Mont-Royale. And don’t forget Montréal’s 18 miles of underground malls intermixed with its superb subway system!
Start your tour of Montréal in the old city by exploring the 18th and 19th century residences, the Notre-Dame Basilica, and historic museums like Pointe-á-Callière museum and the Centre d’histoire de Montréal.
Stop on by the Old Port for its many attractions, restaurants, and especially the Montréal Science Centre with an IMAX theatre. Feeling brave? Take a turbulent trip along the Lachine Rapids for a wet and wild adventure!
Shopping enthusiasts will fall in love with downtown Montréal and its vast array of department stores, boutiques, restaurants, cafés, and cinemas. For a touch of culture, schedule a visit to the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain, the McCord Museum of Canadian History, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture.
Still looking for more? Then don’t forget Île Notre-Dame and Île Sainte-Hélène! At Parc-Jean-Drapeau, you can take the kids to La Ronde, Québec’s largest amusement park with over 40 rides and attractions. For those hot summer days, stop on by the city’s very own beach.
In the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood, you’ll find Olympic Park, host of the 1976 Olympic Games. Olympic Park is also proud to boast the world’s tallest inclined tower, La Tour de Montréal. Ride up to its observatory for the most breathtaking view of the city and several miles stretching beyond.
Within the same area, you can visit the Biodôme, which houses four different ecosystems under one roof! And for a sight that will fill your senses visually and aromatically, come to the Montréal Botanical Garden, one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. You’ll delight in its several different flora and gardens, including a Chinese and Japanese garden.
If you’re not the squeamish sort, then head on over to the Insectarium where you can observe insects from all over the world up close and personal.
