MoroccoA northern African country that’s long captured the imagination of American and European travelers, the Morocco of today is a country changing for the better. Located on the northwest coast of Africa, Moroccan culture has been influenced by a wide variety of Mediterranean cultures. The cities of Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, and Tangier are blends of Islam and European tradition, making them truly unique travel destinations.
The official language here is Arabic, but French, Spanish and English are also widely spoken, making Morocco one of the more tourist-friendly African countries. In addition, United States citizens do not need a visa to visit Morocco for leisure travel.
The capital city of Morocco is Rabat, a town that’s an eclectic mix of Islam and European traditions. Mosques and cafes are both in abundance here; most of the city’s landmarks date from around the 12th century, when Rabat was used as a base city for assaults against the Spanish.
It’s the cities of Casablanca, Marrakech, and Tangier that usually get the most tourist attention in Morocco, however. Casablanca is now the country’s biggest and most industrial city and is home to the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world. The Corniche, along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, is a bustling strip with restaurants and clubs.
Marrakech is the cultural center of Morocco, a market town famous for such sites as the Place Jemaa-el-Fna, a large square in the city that’s filled with merchants, food stalls, and entertainers. The Koutoubia mosque, built in the 11th century, is considered a masterpiece of Hispanic-Moorish art, while the Badii Palace is known as a prime example of Muslim architecture.
Located near the Straits of Gibraltar, the city of Tangier has been a crossroads of civilization for centuries and for years was an international free zone. Kasbah Square and two “soccos”—Grand Socco and Petit Socco—are the popular areas to visit in this city.
