MunichMunich, often known as Germany’s “second city” for its high volume of tourists each year, is also its third largest city with a population of about 1.3 million. The city contains several important art galleries and the internationally famous Oktoberfest, a 2-week festival with several rides and amusements in very large tents.
Munich’s English Garden is the largest city park in Europe where visitors can sunbathe in the nude, jog along beautiful running paths, boat, sail, surf and drink Pilsner’s in the beer gardens.
The Königsplatz is an open square and the site of many of the city’s major art museums, playing host to the occasional open-air cinema and rock concert. The Glyptothek houses plenty of Greek and Roman sculpture, including the Barbarini Faun. And across from that is Lenbach, a mock-Etruscan villa containing works by some of Germany’s best known 19th-century artists.
Marienplatz is still the beating heart of the old city center, a famous square rife with neo-Gothic architecture and the Gockenspiel clock. The world can be found here on a bright and sunny day, enjoying the weather, the beer, and the flavorful markets. Don’t forget to check out the two churches skirting the square, St. Peterskirche and the Heiliggeistkirchie, whose oxidized copper domes are famous images reproduced all over the city.
For a visual delight, take a look at Nymphenburg palace, a former royal family summer residence that takes decadence over the top. See the two-story dining hall filled to the brim with frescoes or walk along corridors lined with Gobelin tapestries. There’s a Heraldic Room, a Chinese Lacquer Room, and the Gallery of Beauties lined with the portraits of 38 attractive women. On the grounds are an English garden, waterways, a hunting lodge, a Chinese teahouse, a bathing house, tropical greenhouses, and a natural history museum.
For your palette, make sure to stop by the Viktualienmarkt, one of Europe’s greatest food markets where just about anything and everything under the sun can be found. In the summer, the market is transformed into an expensive and upscale beer garden.
