Naples

Teeming with residents and tourists meandering down its scrawl of streets and buildings stretched along a waterfront beneath the imposing shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Naples, the largest city in southern Italy and third largest overall, is a city brimming with vitality and culture.

While not as heavily frequented as Florence or Rome, Naples is nearly overrun with ancient churches, a medieval university, and myriads of eateries and cafes.

Major attractions include the Chiesa Di San Domenico Maggiore, a Gothic-fashioned church finished in 1324 by the Dominican order. Inside the church, Baroque and 19th Century Neo-Gothic style decorates the walls, floors, and ceilings, completed with many examples of Renaissance sculpture. 45 coffins of the princes of Aragón and other nobles rest in the sacristy.

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli contains rare Greco-Roman artifacts from Pompeii and the Herculaneum. There is also a Borgia collection of Etruscan and Egyptian relics. The Gabinetto Segreto, filled with several erotic statues and formerly only open to scholars and academics, was recently opened to the public.

If you get tired of the constant parade of museums, take a refreshing stroll along La Villa Comunale, a refurbished park that stretches along the seafront in the western end of the city. It also contains Europe’s oldest aquarium and is often favored by the locals for family walks on Sunday mornings.

Naples is renowned for its food, especially the birth of pizza with major contributions to coffee and ice cream.
