NetherlandsDestinations in Netherlands
Known abroad for its pragmatic liberalism and all-around easiness just as much as its unusually flat, below sea-level terrain, the Netherlands (don’t let the 16.25 million locals hear you calling it Holland) is also a beautiful and exciting place to vacation in. Just as Amsterdam can be party central, the countryside – especially the smaller Dutch towns and villages – can be quaint and charming
The Netherland’s capital, Amsterdam, is usually the first and only thing visitors will think of when planning their itinerary. The city is well known for its decidedly relaxed atmosphere and love of fun and entertainment. It has an excellent nightlife, featuring several bars, pubs, restaurants, and shops.
Many of its neighborhoods are devoted to everything from the sleaze of the red light district to the charmingly crooked little houses dotting the several canals that network through the city.
The Dutch have blessed the world with several artistic geniuses and have the museums to prove it, from the Kröller-Müller Museum in the country’s largetst national park, Hoge Veluwe, to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Such works include Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Steen, Picasso, and Mondrian.
Traveling a bit further outside of Amsterdam, you’ll encounter what the Dutch call the Randstad, Netherlands’s most densely populated region. It spreads in a circle from the capital to incorporate smaller towns and cities like Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, Leiden, and Delft. In and around these towns are bulb fields that explode with color between March and May. It’s worth a back roads bicycle trip, for sure.
