New Orleans

New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana with 484,674 inhabitants in the city itself, renown for the multicultural influences that color its music, festivals, cuisine, buildings, and general way of life. There is no other place in the United States where Spanish and French culture blend so seamlessly together, or where such a strong belief in Voodoo still persists to this day by the city’s Creole culture.

New Orleans's original heart lies in the French Quarter, and it still retains most of the city’s biggest tourist draws. During the day, this area is sleepy and staid, but at night, the atmosphere comes wildly alive along Bourbon Street, Royal Street, Jackson Square, and Chartres Street.

A vast array of street musicians fill the air with jazz, blues, and Cajun music, drunken revelers stumble along the sidewalk with their drinks in hand, and fortune tellers will give you a glimpse into your future. During many of the city’s festivities, most notably Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and the Sugar Bowl, expect these nightly celebrations to increase one hundredfold.

The affluent Garden District is old enough to be preserved by federal and state ordinances with its unique architecture of Georgian manors and Spanish moss. Within this area you’ll find the Audubon Zoological Gardens, which contains one of the country’s riches collections of wildlife, Tulane University, and probably most notable of all, Lafayette Cemetery No 1, giving the district its eerie quality with its above-ground tombs.
