New Zealand

Coming out of exotic security thanks to a few top-selling films and syndicated television shows, New Zealand has always been a place of unspoiled beauty, from its glacial mountains and clear lakes to its green forest reserves and deserted beaches.

Many seek out New Zealand for the wealth of outdoor activities it provides amongst its scenic landscapes like hiking, climbing, skiing, rafting, and even bungee-jumping.

New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, located on the southwestern tip of the country’s North Island, is the southernmost capital city in the world and as a consequence, tends to have somewhat inclement weather, nicknamed by kiwis as “Windy Wellington.”

But despite the weather, the people are warm and the cultural scene is thriving with an art scene, café culture, and a buzzing nightlife that is said to rival those of the cities many times its size.

Special attractions include the Beehive, the old Government Building, which is one of the largest all-wooden buildings in the world, the National Library, the Te Papa museum, a zoo, and nearby Mount Victoria which holds some of the best views of the city and the cheapest accommodations and dining. There’s also terrific shopping on Cuba Street and several historic sites along Thorndon.

The largest city in New Zealand is Auckland, further up north than Wellington and bewitching with the subtropical forests of its nearby hills and islands. The city itself is all you could want from an urban environment, strong and pulsing.

The picturesque Pacific Ocean flanks almost every side and its attractions are many, with several aquariums and museums devoted to this wonderful element. There’s also a significant Maori culture heavily prevalent in the area as well as dinosaur skeletons, and stargazing at the Observatory.

To get a feel for the first settlers of New Zealand, head on up to Northland, a cradle of Maori and European culture. This is the site where the two cultures first made contact and the first whaling settlements established. This winterless north has several museums devoted to this history, like the Kauri Museum, not to mention the glorious Ninety Mile Beach and diving spots like Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve.
