Niagara FallsEveryone knows that you go to Niagara Falls to see...Niagara Falls. The majesty of these waterfalls is no big secret. But what many don’t realize is that after you’ve had enough of the amazing water that you came to see, there are plenty of reasons to stick around for a while. And you can do it all without ever leaving the New York side of the falls.
Before that point, however, you’ve got to visit the falls. From the American side, the best viewing point is from the Observation Tower at Prospect Point, within the Niagara Falls State Park. An elevator takes you to the top of the tower, which extends over the gorge wall. To get even closer, the famous Maid of the Mist boats will ferry you directly to the base of the falls. You get a souvenir poncho with admission to the ferry, and you’re probably going to need it.
Just outside of Niagara Falls State Park is the Aquarium of Niagara, where more than 1,500 marine animals are on display. Human aquatic activity (of a sort) is commemorated at the Daredevils of Niagara Falls Museum, which recognizes all those foolhardy souls who’ve made the great plunge in barrels or other containers.
If you need a break from all things waterfalls, five local vineyards near the Niagara Escarpment have joined together as the Niagara Wine Trail, forming a great mini-wine tasting tour. Or, if you’ve got the kids with you, the Niagara area has endless opportunities for family fun. There are standards, such as mini-golf and arcades, and the more unusual as well. Check out the MAiZE, a human labyrinth created in an eight-acre cornfield.
