North Carolina

Strikingly picturesque and serene, North Carolina stages the defining point between the northern and southern Atlantic states. The result is a rich assortment of rural and cosmopolitan, a Southern culture that is touched by Northern affluence.

The state offers up a surprising mixture of terrain, from the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains in the west, the rolling hills of the Piedmont region in central North Carolina, to the stunning eastern coastline that promises sun, sea, and leisure.

Grab a taste of the outdoors in North Carolina’s stunning mountain range, especially the 25 miles of igneous rock known as Stone Mountain. This area affords something for everyone, whether you’re an experienced rock climber looking to challenge yourself on the “Taken For Granite” and “Fantastic” routesor a family looking for a mild hiking trail to wander on.

Central North Carolina is combed with lush vineyards, boasting a production of over 2800 tons of Suppermongs, a kind of large, white grape of the Muscadine variety, which are then turned into wine. Also in this area is a great mineral diversity which includes gold, emeralds, rubies, sapphires, and even diamonds. You can check out these glittering gems at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.

The Carolina coasts are unique for their significant amount of natural bays, which scientists believe were caused by a meteor shower several millennia ago. At any rate, the result of this means a number of state parks and placid lakes where families and couples can enjoy a number of outdoor activities such as golf, swimming, sailing, picnics, walks, and even hang gliding at Kitty Hawk.

If you’re hungering for some more creature comforts, check out Charlotte or the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill that make up the Research Triangle Park, one of the nation’s premiere industrial regions for high-tech research and development. These cities hold the cultural and economic pulse of North Carolina, offering up a wealth of cultural activities such as music, food, performance, and shopping as well as growing, successful businesses and companies.
