Nova Scotia

As one of Canada’s most beautiful provinces, Nova Scotia is the second smallest Maritime Province after Prince Edward Island, with no part of the area being more than 35 miles from the sea. With a population count just shy of one million, Nova Scotia has a small, close knit community among its rocky coasts and small fishing villages.

The best way to explore this province is by car. Nova Scotia is both accessible by land through New Brunswick or by several car-transporting ferries that run to and from the province to many locations in the area, including Portland and Boston. There are eleven scenic travelways that run along the coast, each one featuring a unique aspect of the province, from its majestic lighthouses on the Lighthouse Route to the metropolis feel of the Halifax/Dartmouth Route.

For a great learning experience, Nova Scotia is rife with history and culture, from Acadian to Scottish. A network of museums and heritage sites run throughout the province, including Lunenberg, the Museum of Natural History, Highland Village, the Fundy Geological Museum, and the Museum of Industry.

There is also Cape Breton Island, almost completely devoted to French and Scottish heritage. It’s home to several historic villages, golf courses, and Celtic music festivals along its grassy shores, shimmering waters, and rolling highlands.

If you’re itchy for the city life, then Halifax, Nova Scotia’s capital, is your answer, with several attractions and festivals all throughout the year. For your fill of history, check out the Halifax Citadel National Historical Site housed at the top of Halifax’s big central hill. Learn about the history of the fort and take in the hourly changes of the guard.

Halifax’s student life has heavily influenced the atmosphere, with several small theaters, restaurants, cafes, and shops littering the downtown area. It has an active music scene, from jazz to folk to hip hop to just about any kind of style out there, with live music every night of the week.
