Oahu

If you’re planning a visit to Hawaii, the beautiful island of Oahu and its main city, Honolulu, will be your first stop. Among the unique highlights of the island are a royal palace, the world’s best surfing, and a vibrant, multi-ethnic city. Oahu is the most populated of the Hawaiian Islands, home to almost three-fourths of the state’s 1.2 million residents.

About 370,000 people reside in Honolulu, the state capital. In addition to its beautiful beaches, surfing and water sports, and great year-round weather, Honolulu is a vibrant city with an amazingly rich multicultural heritage. It’s also the seventh-most popular tourist destination in the United States.

Your first stop on Oahu is likely to be one of the numerous beaches for which Hawaii is so justly famous. Whether you want to go swimming, surfing, or sunbathing, you can do it all in Honolulu, especially at the famous Waikiki Beach. Surfers will flock to the North Shore, where some of the world’s best-known breaks—Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, and the Banzai Pipeline—can be found.

There are many more things to do on Oahu than soak up the sun. Book a historical tour that takes you to the ‘Iolani Palace, the palace of Hawaiian kings and queens, and the only regal palace in the United States. For further historical interest, visit the Arizona Memorial, located on the Pearl Harbor Navy Base. Outdoor activities that don’t involve a bathing suit on Oahu include a hike up the trails at Diamond Head and a walk through Honolulu’s Chinatown.

The Bishop Museum, open year-round, features Hawaiian history and culture and is considered the world’s best collection of Polynesian artifacts. Hawaii is also a popular spot for golf. Several PGA tournaments are held throughout the year, including winter months. Family attractions include the Waikiki Aquarium and the Honolulu Zoo.
