OttawaCanada’s federal capital is one of the most beautiful cities to behold, ensconced at the mouth of three rivers, the Ottawa River, the Rideau River, and the Rideau Canal, and holding a population of more than 800,000 people.
It borders the province of Québec, so its mixture of English and French culture is especially apparent. And even though it’s the seat of the country’s government, Ottawa still remains quite accessible, with open green spaces, parks, and wilderness.
Ottawa is a historic city, inundated with rich heritage that holds the heart of the country’s many museums and exhibits, the highest concentration of museums in Canada. Check out the National Gallery of Canada or the Canadian War Museum. Ottawa also has such notable museums as the Canadian Science and Technology Museum and the Museum of Aviation.
Come and see history in the making by taking a tour of Parliament Hill, the very home of Ottawa’s democratic government where decisions are made that affect the life of every Canadian citizen.
The capital city is also the host of several internationally famous festivals. In February, you can attend the Winterlude festival on the Rideau Canal, a heartwarming celebration in the midst of cold temperatures and bitter winds. Come May is the Tulip Festival where the city is bombarded with thousands of tulips from the royal family of the Netherlands in remembrance of the time when Canada was sanctuary for the family in the midst of the Netherlands’ Nazi occupation.
For those who love the outdoors, Ottawa is the perfect city to play in. The National Capital Commission has reserved an extensive area around the city called the Greenbelt for conservation and leisure. Enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities in its many forests, swamps, lakes, and marshlands.
