PamplonaSituated in northern Spain within the Navarra region, Ernest Hemingway once glorified Pamplona for its exciting spirit and its world famous bullfighting, especially the “Running of the Bulls” festival that draws thousands from all over the globe to come and see this exciting spectacle.
It all happens in the Plaza de Toros, the bullring located close to the town walls by the Arga River. In addition to several bullfights that are held throughout the year, the most important festival that draws in the crowds is San Fermin on July 7th, when bulls are set loose through the streets while hundreds of young men dressed in traditional white shirts and red belts run ahead of them. The festival lasts all week long with long days of festivities, dancing, and drinking.
Several parks can be found along the Arga River, known for their beauty and old historic monuments. Tejera Park features several towers built into the town walls and even on of the six old doors leading into the town, Puerta de Zumalacárregui. Beyond this lies another park, Park of Santo Domingo where the baroque-styled town hall, the Seminar of San Juan Bautista, the Sarrasate Museum, and the town’s archive are located.
When night comes into the city, it’s hardly ready for bed. Head on over to the center of town around the Plaza del Castillo for a taste of Pamplona’s more traditional bars and the traditional meal of poteo, usually a glass of beer or wine and a snack, called picho or pintro.
For more specific and varied forms of nightlife entertainment, visit the Barrio de San Juan, making a point to stop by Avenida de Bayona for a myriad of cafeterias, pubs, traditional bars, discotheques, and locals with live music acts ranging from classical to jazz to techno.
