PattayaLocated just 165 km southeast of Bankgok, Pattaya is Thailand’s exceedingly popular beach resort, with just 95,000 permanent inhabitants and over 1.5 million visitors flocking to its sandy beaches annually.
Once a place for Vietnam soldiers to rest and relax off-duty, the city has since become a hotspot for both singles and families to vacation. In 2001, there were over 24,000 hotel rooms available to cater to this rising industry.
The obvious main attractions of the city are its beaches, mainly Pattaya Beach situated along the city’s center where there is also a wealth of hotels, bars, restaurants, nightclubs and shops. People enjoy jet-skiing and speed boating in these warm waters as well. For more family-oriented beaches, try North Pattaya, Naklua, and Jomtien Beach.
Jomtien is especially more sedate than the main Pattaya Beach, located close to a residential neighborhood. Water sport activities include jet-skis, parasailing, and scuba diving. There is also the Pattaya Park with its 56-storey Pattaya Park Tower nearby, an entertainment complex featuring a water park, roller coaster, and several activities for children.
Other enjoyable activities in the city include golfing, go-cart racing, several theme parks, and zoos like Mini Siam, Sri Racha Tiger Zoo, and the Elephant Village. The nearby island of Ko Lan features even more beaches, known for being cleaner and less crowded.
The nightlife in Pattaya is world famous. There are hundreds of bars, restaurants, and clubs that party hard every night, 365 days a year. Muay Thai matches are popular in open-air beer bars along Beach Road and Walking Street. There’s also a significant array of exotic clubs, go-go bars, and cabaret shows to suit any and all tastes.
