Philadelphia

Share your (brotherly) love with a vacation in Philadelphia, home of American history, independence, culture, and cheese steak. From the Liberty Bell and Ben Franklin to more modern American traditions like fanatical sports worship, Philly is a city with something for everyone.

Philadelphia was one of the birthplaces of American independence, and that spirit of freedom is celebrated today at sites like the National Constitution Center, the Christ Church Burying Ground (final resting place of Benjamin Franklin, among others), and Independence National Historical Park (where you’ll find the Liberty Bell). Outside the city, Valley Forge National Historic Park honors soldiers who fought in the American Revolution and War of Independence.

A lot of Philly’s modern culture revolves around food. Cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and hoagies are at the top of the list, but the city has plenty of fine dining as well. If you want to work off that cheesesteak, take the obligatory run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art—you know, those famous ones from Rocky. The art in the museum is well worth a visit, too; check out famous works by Picasso and Duchamp as well as the extensive Asian art collection.

Families will enjoy a visit to the Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest in America. Visit the Please Touch Museum, specially designed for kids ages 1-7, where everything is hands-on and nothing is off limits for kids. Older children might enjoy the Academy of Natural Sciences, which is one of the world’s top natural history museums and has many exhibits designed especially for younger visitors.

Philadelphia is unquestionably a sports town. The Philly Phanatic, beloved Phillies mascot, has a new home with his team at recently-opened Citizens Bank Park. The NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers, and the NBA’s 76ers are also local favorites. Dozens of public and private golf courses are in and around the city.
