Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, situated in the Andaman Sea off the coast of the Malay Peninsula. It’s a very mountainous island and 70% of it is covered in forest with less than 300,000 inhabitants.
However, Phuket has become internationally famous for being a hot tourist spot. Its western coast beaches are wildly popular and have been carved into exotic tourist resorts.
The main tourist region of Phuket is Patong Beach and its adorning town. This region also contains the weight of the island’s nightlife and is the center of bargain shopping. For something a little quieter, try Karon Beach and Kata Beach.
Further south is Kata Noi Beach, which prolongs the Kata Beach on the western coast. This beach is dominated by the Mon Tri’s Boathouse resort and the Kata Thani resort.
If you want a change of scenery, head on down to the southernmost point of the island. This area is called Laem Promthep, which boasts a spectacular sunset view.
