Provence

Provence, or more formally, Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur, is an administrative region of France that encompasses the area from the French Alps to the French Riviera, a decidedly mixed terrain of snow-capped mountains and clear, rolling lands, and sunny beaches.

It may be strange to be able to ski an hour’s drive away from getting a suntan, but this unique geography makes a wild assortment of activities available.

The French Alps above Nice rise up to 4000 meters, perfect for skiing and winter sports. In the summer, people hike, bike, and even horseback ride through the mountains. Daredevils can even find something to their taste with parachute jumping, rafting, and mountain climbing.

The heart of Provence, the sloping lands between the coast and the Alps, is covered in fertile vineyards that produce some of France’s best known exports of grapes, wines, and perfumes. Grapes include varieties such as Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault that produce rosé wine. Also noted for its cuisine, Provence food is characterized by its use of fresh vegetables, herbs, and oils like tomatoes, eggplants, thyme, and olive oil.

Of course, the French Riviera receives a huge influx of visitors nearly year round for its great weather, sparkling beaches, and clear waters. Many cities and towns, such as Cannes and Marseille, dot the coast are devoted to tourists, with first class hotels, restaurants, shops, private beaches, and luxury hourses.
