Quebec CityThis historic city is one of the oldest landmarks in North America, often nicknamed the Fortified City for being the only city on the continent to have conserved most of its defense system.
Having cradled the beginnings of French civilization in Canada, Québec City has grown up to be a bustling seaport, cultural hotspot, and the capital of Québec Province today.
The first thing about the city that will strike you is the majestic architecture, from the imposing Citadel – still occupied by regular troops and the Governor General of Canada! – to the world-famous Château Frontenac. Québec is a city of old stone walls and narrow, winding roads, so put on a pair of good walking shoes and wander about the city to fulfill your visual palette.
A few places worthy to visit in the old quarter are the Notre-Dame-de-Québec Basilica, featuring a huge art collection and an excellent sound and light show, and the Hôtel du Parlement de Québec, seat of the province’s National Assembly.
Take the city’s funicular down to Lower Town’s Place-Royale and Petit-Champlain, areas rich in art and craft boutiques, restaurants, bistros, and interactive, thematic museums, then go to the Old Port to hop on a cruise for a decidedly different view of the city.
Climb back up to Upper Town and stop by the Aquarium near the Québec Bridge and the zoo in Charlesbourg.
But perhaps the two biggest attractions of Québec City are the International Summer Festival and Carnaval, the biggest winter festival in the world. From July 7th through the 17th, the city’s summer festival puts on over 400 shows with hundreds of musicians all over the world.
From January 28th through February 13th, Carnaval offers a mixture of arts, culture, and entertainment to cheer up those cold, winter days.
