Rhodes

Ancient Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese islands and its most historically important, lies in the Aegean Sea off the eastern coast of mainland Greece. It largely stayed out of the Peloponnesian War in 431 BC, but sided with Ptolemy in the territorial squabbling after Alexander the Great’s death and formed a strong cultural and commercial tie with Egypt as a result.

It’s probably most famous for something that no longer even exists, the Colossus of Rhodes, once hailed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. But the statue toppled in an earthquake and was subsequently broken up and sold in pieces by invading Arab forces. Despite its missing wonder, there is still plenty to see and do in Rhodes including several historic ruins and sandy beaches to lounge on.

Rhodes City itself is a World Heritage site, first planned by architect Hippodamos and today now a mixture of Byzantine, Turkish, and Latin architecture. There are numerous alleys and squares enclosed within massive walls. The city is divided between what is known as the Knights’ Quarter and the Hora, lined with museums, mosques, 200 discos and bars, and the Acropolis of Rhodes, which contains a restored second century stadium as well as the Temple of Pythian Apollo.

Lindos draws the people out of Rhodes city with its famous Acropolis perched on top of a 380ft high rock. Also in Lindos is the 4th-century Temple to Athena, the city’s most important ruin. It’s such a highly-touristed city that there are many walkways, banks, restaurants, and hotels for visitors. If you have the money to spend, try out Faliraki Beach, Rhodes’s premiere resort.
