RomeRome, the capital of Italy and also its largest city with a population of a little over 2.5 million, is all about History, all 3,150 years of it, from the Etruscans to the Roman Empire, the Byzantine to the Renaissance.
It seems like anywhere you go in Rome, you’re tripping over some ancient site or landmark, from basilicas, museums, galleries, arches, aqueducts, to palazzos, arenas, statues, temples, amphitheaters and fountains.
One of its most famous relics is the multi-arched Colosseum, where 50,000 spectators once sat and looked upon gladiatorial combat. Or perhaps the Circus Maximus, where the great chariot races were held, is more to your liking.
Take in a little government action by walking around the visually stunning Capitoline Hill, the center of government in Ancient Rome, designed by Michelangelo.
Rome also contains the Vatican City State, a sovereign enclave within the city ruled over by the Pope. Rome is also home to the five major Basilicas of the Catholic Church: St. John Lateran, St. Peter’s Basilica, St. Paul outside the Walls, St. Mary Major, and St. Lawrence outside the Walls.
