San AntonioSan Antonio just might be the quintessential Texas city. With its rich multicultural history, San Antonio truly embodies the “TexMex” spirit. A visit to this city will give you much more to remember than the Alamo.
It can more or less be taken for granted that any trip to San Antonio will include a stop at the Alamo, one of the top historical attractions in the United States. But the Alamo isn’t the only attraction in San Antonio—it’s not even the only mission that’s still preserved. Take a stroll down the Mission Trail to see the other four Spanish missions: Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada. The Spanish Governor’s Palace has been named the most beautiful building in the city by National Geographic.
For another spectacular walk in the city, check out the area known as River Walk, or Paseo del Rio. Three miles of cobblestone paths border the banks of the San Antonio River in this historic city park. Along the walk, you’ll find shopping, dining, and other activities, with guided boat tours available on the river itself.
The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum features some of the strangest collections you’ll ever see in a museum—stuffed and mounted animal specimens from around the world as well as a wax museum depicting Texas history. It was named the top San Antonio attraction in 2002—and yes, it also has a saloon.
More traditional museums in San Antonio include the San Antonio Museum of Art and the San Antonio Children’s Museum. The Institute of Texan Cultures features exhibits on over 26 Texan cultural groups.
For sports, the hometown favorites are the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs and the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars. San Antonio gets over 300 days of sunshine per year and, combined with the city’s generally mild temperatures, the city has become a major golfing destination. Over 50 courses are in the metropolitan area.
